How Can a VTPBIS Coach Help?

VTPBIS Coaches provide schools and SU/SDs with in-person or virtual coaching and training to support PBIS implementation fidelity and to build in-school and in-district capacity. Specific goals for coaching are determined collaboratively by the PBIS coordinator/administrator/team and coach. Examples of coaching/training support are listed below. Leadership Consultation

  • Provide coaching to support PBIS coordinator and/or principal in their PBIS leadership role.
  • Meet with PBIS coordinator and/or principal and/or PBIS team to determine needs/next steps.

Strengthening PBIS Team

  • Attend PBIS team meeting(s) to provide feedback about team and systems needs.
  • Work with the PBIS team to develop/solidify systems.
  • Work with the PBIS team to implement, refine, and/or strengthen practices.
  • Guide PBIS team to build capacity for data-based decision-making.
  • Support PBIS team in elevating student and family/caregiver voice, representation, and meaningful participation in PBIS implementation.

Initial Implementation Support

  • Guide PBIS coordinator/principal/PBIS team through preparation and readiness steps for training at the Universal, Targeted, or Intensive levels.
  • Support team in building initial staff understanding and support for PBIS implementation.
  • Support team in gathering student, family/caregiver, and staff input to inform the development of the school’s PBIS implementation plan.
  • Provide support during roll-out and first-year implementation of Universal, Targeted, or Intensive PBIS.

Ongoing Implementation Support

  • Support team in building collective ownership among staff.
  • Support team in ensuring equity (access, representation, meaningful participation, and high outcomes) and cultural responsiveness in PBIS implementation.
  • Support team in deepening family/caregiver engagement.
  • Provide observation and feedback to staff about classroom and supervision practices.
  • Support team in preparing for the Refreshing, Enhancing, and Deepening PBIS training.

Professional Development

  • Assist PBIS team/coordinator/principal in determining PBIS/social/emotional/behavioral/mental health-related professional development needs.
  • Provide training/workshops to school staff on PBIS/social/emotional/behavioral/mental health-related topics, including PBIS basics, strengthening PBIS-related practices (classroom behavior support, relationship building, de-escalation, function-based thinking, restorative practices, educator well-being, etc.), and building collective ownership.

Assessment Support and Action-Planning

  • Conduct walk-through in advance of team completion of the Tiered Fidelity Inventory (TFI).
  • Conduct in-person Learning Walk, anchored to Tier I of the Tiered Fidelity Inventory (TFI).
  • Support team in preparing for the Tiered Fidelity Inventory (TFI), Self-Assessment Survey (SAS), and/or school climate survey.
  • Support team in completing the Tiered Fidelity Inventory (TFI).
  • Support team in using PBIS assessment data to develop annual and long-term action plans.

How can schools/SUs/SDs access VTPBIS State-Approved Coaches?

Below is a list of recommended steps to follow when considering contracting with a VTPBIS State Approved Coach:

  1. Prior to the start of the school year, contact your VTPBIS State TA to review the needs of your SU/SD/School as well as possible resources to meet these needs.
  2. Review the VTPBIS Coach Fee: $80/hour plus mileage.
  3. Coordinate with your central office Grants Coordinator to use local funds or to apply for BEST/Act 230 funds, which are available to support a VTPBIS Coach.
